HISTORY
The opening services of The Church At Lakewood were held in the spring of 1979 in the chapel of New Tacoma Cemetery. The ground-breaking ceremony was held on October 3, 1982 at our present location.
The founding pastor of The Church at Lakewood was Don McCauley. He, along with 30 others, desired to begin a Spirit-filled church in Lakewood. They began meeting as a home Bible study group. Over time they met in the chapel, John Dower School and in the fall of 1983 they held services in their new building.
Through the years the church has enjoyed the ministry of four Senior Pastors; Don McCauley, John Vertefeuille, Mark Nordtvedt and David Zetterberg. Under their various ministries the church has grown and had an impact on the community of Lakewood.
CORE BELIEFS
1. About God
We believe there is one God. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26-27; 3:22; Matthew 28:19; Luke 3:21-22; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
A. The Father
We believe that God the Father is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He breathed into man the very breathe of life. Because of sin, mankinds relationship with the Father has been broken. Because of the Fathers intense love for His creation, He has made a way for the relationship to be restored. The price was the death of His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. (Genesis 1:1; 2:7; Isaiah 40; Hebrews 11:3; John 3:16; Romans 3:23)
B. The Son
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He was born of a virgin, performed many miracles, lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all by dying on the cross. He arose bodily from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven and will bodily return again to the earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14,15; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4; Romans 1:3,4; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Acts 1:9-11)
C. The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He was sent to the earth to indwell the believers. He is present in the world to make mankind aware of our need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every believer to provide power for living, understanding of spiritual truths, and guidance in doing what is right. He also provides spiritual gifts to help us serve God and minister to others. (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13; 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; 5:1; Galatians 5:25)
2. About The Bible
We believe the Bible is Gods word to mankind. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of errors. (2 Timothy 3:16; 1:13; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 119: 105, 160; 12:6; Proverbs 30:5)
3. About Mankind
We believe that man was made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. We are the supreme objects of Gods creation. Although mankind has tremendous potential for good, we are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called sin. This attitude separates us from God. (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; 59:1,2; Romans 3:23)
4. About Salvation
We believe that salvation is a gift from God to mankind. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as Gods offer of forgiveness can we be saved from sins penalty. We must believe in Jesus Christ, turn from our sin, and accept the gift of salvation by faith. (Romans 6:23; 5:1; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26)
5. About Eternity
We believe that we were all created to spiritually exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. The place of eternal separation from God is called Hell. The place of eternal union with God is called Heaven. (John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; Matthew 25:41; Revelation 21:27)
6. About The Church
We believe that the church is to be Christ's Body on earth. Its primary functions are teaching, discipling, praying, worshipping, fellowshipping and the continual spreading of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The church is made up of individual believers committed to God and to each other. We share in the hope of the bodily rapture at the return of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27;15:50-57; Romans 12:4,5; Acts 2:42-47; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; Matthew 28:18-20)

WHO WE ARE
Our weekly Middle School Service happens every Sunday morning from 11:00 am - 12:00pm. Our service provides a place for Middle School Students to have a blast. This service consists of exciting games, fellowship, small groups and relevant teaching.
Our mission is to seek the fulfillment of the Great Commission fueled by the Great Commandment, Ambient Student Ministries exists to expose non believers to Christs love, to enable Students to grow in their faith, to connect them with other Christians and to empower them to serve and honor their creator.
THE GREAT COMMISSION
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20
THE GREAT COMMANDMENT
And he said to him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40
THE VISION
To be a biblical community where the Gospel of Jesus Christ transforms lives, renews the city, and impacts the world. As part of seeing the city renewed, we believe God has called Ambient to see a significant number of students from the city of Lakewood walk across the line of faith and become integrated into Christian community.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
Ambient provides incredible events that we hope will inspire students to live a passionate life for God: yearly retreats, winter camp, youth conferences, all-nighters, lake parties, bonfires, and various other events.
SERVICE PROJECTS
Throughout the year our youth ministry provides various service projects: World Vision 30 Hour famine, volunteering at the Tillicum Youth and Family Center, Campus life at Gray middle School, as well as other projects.
Every lesson, activity, talk, and small group time we do at Ambient Student Ministries is based on our mission statement. There are 7 core values that we believe are important for every student to know.
-Authentic Faith
-Spiritual Disciplines
-Moral Boundaries
-Wise choices
-Healthy Friendships
-Ultimate Authority, and Others First.
Our hope is that students will be equipped to live their lives for Jesus in a real, authentic, and passionate way.
For more information on Ambient Student Ministries or to serve contact Peter or fill out a communication card and place it in the offering plate. *An interview, and applications are required for youth ministry involvement. Training is provided on an ongoing basis.
Our weekly High School Service happens Sunday Nights from 6:00pm to 7:30 pm. Its one and a half hours packed with games, live worship, fellowship, relevant Bible teachings, and small groups.

We are a gathering of young adults from the areas of Tacoma and Lakewood who seek to become passionate disciples of Christ through:
-community fellowship and support of one another
-growing in the transforming nature of the Word
-and being led to action by the common light within us
WE BELIEVE
John 8:31b-32, when Jesus says, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
ENCOMPASS BIBLE STUDY
This winter, Encompass will study the book of Acts and go deeper into the Word of God. Everyone does a short daily Bible study on their own using a folder of resources that we provide, and at our Wednesday meeting we discuss different topics based on the readings.
Our hope is that this night is full of fellowship as well as spiritual growth for all who attend. It is encouraging to hear more about each others’ lives and support each other through prayer. We want to welcome you into this young adult community!
Location will be at The Church at Lakewood, unless otherwise posted. If you need a folder, contact Katrina Lepp.
WHAT WE DO
We want to live out our vision and mission statement, as seen above, through weekly events. These include Bible study sessions (during the summer months we will study the book of Isaiah) as well as fellowship meetings (which vary from baseball games to bonfires).
Visit our Facebook page (Encompass Young Adult Ministry) for more information.
